The year is 2044 and somehow the country has become a pretty desolate place devoid of joy and hope. Many folks find it better to spend their days living in OASIS, the internet world created by billionaire James Halliday. This virtual online alternative to life as we know it is the everyday “home” to Wade Watts, screen name “Parcival”.
Wade lives in squalor on earth but in OASIS he is a game playing mega-star. He and a few of his friends are on a major quest to solve the puzzle that OASIS creator Halliday has implanted somewhere within the thousands of planets that make up OASIS. Being the first to solve this gigantic puzzle will result in great wealth and esteem. Years go by with nary a clue solved until Wade/Parcival stumbles upon the first “egg”. It seems Halliday was a huge fan of 80’s culture and anyone who has any chance of success must become an expert on all things 80’s.
There is enough danger and excitement in this online world to keep you turning the pages as the eternal battle of good vs. evil builds toward a grand finale. This was another of those books that I would not have thought to be my kind of book but, again, I was wrong. I totally enjoyed spending a few days in OASIS with Wade and friends. I gave this one **** four stars.
