Thankfully, Blake Crouch put a lot more thought into writing this novel and developing characters and a plot than he did into coming up with a great title for the book. I mean, seriously, RUN ??, that was the best you could come up with?
The book does move at breakneck speed so maybe that’s where “RUN” came from. The Colclough family, father, Jack, mother Dee and children Naomi and Cole flee their Albuquerque, New Mexico home just ahead of bands of marauding killers. It seems there was an incident in the skies over America a few days ago witnessed by many and not seen by many others. Those who viewed the celestial event have experienced profound changes in their behavior. There isn’t any time for Jack to find out what happened there is only time to get the family into his truck and head for the hills, or in this case, cross the Rockies in hope of finding some sense of normal there. Throughout the book the Colclough’s encounter one danger after another from bands of blood thirsty killers to lack of food and fuel. The book moves at a heart-pounding pace and you’ll quickly feel a part of this family as they struggle to survive in a world suddenly gone crazy.
Blake Crouch has a real talent not just for creating the exciting scenarios but also for conveying the landscape and terrain. There are many reviews on Amazon singing the praises of Blake Crouch and his ability to keep you turning pages frantically to see what happens next. I can’t argue with those reviews, he really is an accomplished story-teller.
I had started to give this book *** ½ stars but in looking back over it and remembering more of what I felt while reading it, I’m moving it up to **** four stars. Finally, it’s available for your Kindle (or my phone) for just $3.99. Excellent value for a fast-paced thriller.
