SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL – TRISH DOLLER
Just finished this one and wanted to get my thoughts down while it was fresh in my mind.
Travis Stephenson is the son of a former NFL football great. He is a big disappointment to his Dad because in spite of innate skills, Travis abandoned football in high school and joined the Marines. He is home on leave from Afghanistan and discovering that his parents are heading for a divorce and his younger brother has claimed both his car, and his girlfriend, Paige. As if this wasn’t enough to deal with Travis has just lost his best friend, Charlie, to a Taliban sniper and suffers from constant nightmares and many other haunting images as a result of post traumatic stress syndrome.
Life isn’t totally bleak for Travis, his Mom loves him more than life itself, his ex-Paige sneaks into his room for sex as she is now cheating on his brother and he looks forward to reuniting with his Marine Corps brothers when he returns to Afghanistan.
Life begins to look even better when he meets Harper, a local girl whose reputation he falsely ruined several years ago. Each day brings them closer together and if Travis is to ever heal, it is obvious that Harper will play a big role in making it happen. I really loved the way their relationship advances and Trish Doller does a great job in fleshing out the personalities of both Travis and Harper.
This isn’t a long book and lots of readers got through it in a single reading. It took me longer than that but I totally enjoyed Something Like Normal and recommend it to everyone. I give it **** ½ stars.
